Therapeutic Approach to Classic Asana Immersion

  • Main Street Yoga-Oregon 121 North Main Street Oregon, Wisconsin, 53575 United States (map)

Yoga Sutra 2.46 Sthira Sukham Asanam “The posture should be steady and comfortable.”

Is your yoga practice hurting you? Are you concerned some of your yoga students are at risk of hurting themselves? Or perhaps you would like to get inspired about how to support yourself and your students increase mobility and freedom in their bodies and advance their mat practice to their next level of brilliance.

This immersion is perfect for yoga teachers who want to:

  • safely teach poses for each individual’s anatomical brilliance

  • practice the art of “seeing” bodies and learn how to help students come out of compensation and dysfunctional movement patterns

  • deepen your personal practice and understanding of poses

  • teach a more therapeutic aspect of asana by learning how to creatively level poses and use props

  • teach asana to many levels and abilities of students

  • cue poses from the center out

  • integrate neuromuscular re-education (Somatics) into classic asana

Please note: experience with SomaYoga methodology is a pre-requisite to taking this Immersion. To sign up, participants must have participated in Yoga North ISYI teacher training, SomaYoga & Somatics Intensive, or SomaYoga Approach to Classic Asana (Level 1). If you have questions about whether or not this workshop is right for you, please contact Yoga North. For motivated students, we do have some videos of Beginning SomaYoga series and asanas that could be helpful in preparing.

Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teachers (RYTs) can earn 20 CE credits at the conclusion of this immersion.

In this immersive training, we will look at yoga asana through a study of anatomy, kinesiology, and SomaYoga methodology & techniques so your own practice and students’ practice can flourish with ease. Specific SomaYoga techniques – such as aligning from the spine out to the largest joints and the extremities, and using self-pandiculation to increase mobility and function – will be studied within the framework of this intensive workshop. A variety of yoga asana from several categories of postures will be discussed and practiced through the lens of SomaYoga.

Curriculum will include: a variety of standing poses, forward folds, twists, backbends, pre-inversion practices and preparatory poses for arm balances. We will explore how to use good biomechanics in yoga postures to cultivate and maintain steadiness and ease in yoga asana (postures), how to use the technique of pandiculation to increase mobility, and how to modify, level and use props in postures to progress students in cultivating optimal stability, strength and mobility in yoga practice.
